Kobudo Classes

Becoming a Member

U.S.A. Kobudo Club is your gateway to the traditional martial arts of Japan. Anyone high school-age or above, in reasonably good health, and possessing a sincere desire to learn the traditional martial arts of Japan is invited to join. Benefits of membership include: participation in weekly training and other club events; membership in the Genbukan- KJJR international organizations and discounts on Genbukan products; and opportunities to attend regional and international seminars sponsored by the Genbukan-KJJR organization or any of its official dojo.

Inquirers are encouraged to call (215-430-3103) or email (usakobudo@gmail.com) Toth Sensei to schedule a sample class. What will happen during this sample class? First, you will be asked to discuss your interest in kobudo. What prompted you to call? Do you have any experience with martial arts? What are your goals? How much time do you plan to devote to training? Second, the sample class will give you an opportunity to experience kobudo training first-hand. Classes include several different components—yoga-style stretches and warm-up exercises, traditional meditation, and kobudo techniques—these elements compliment one another and create a well-rounded training regimen. If after the sample class you are still interested in kobudo training, you will be placed in a regular class (see current schedule of classes below).

Students attend one kobudo training class per week, and all classes are limited to as few students as possible to permit individualized instruction. Classes are by appointment only, which means that students attend class on a prearranged day and time each week.

Class Schedule

Jujutsu (75 min) Tue's & Thu's, 6:45 - 8:00 PM

Buki (60 min) Tue's & Thu's, 8:00 - 9:00 PM

Training Equipment

Kobudo training requires a minimum amount of equipment, though the correct clothes and tools (sword, staff, etc.) will ensure a safer and more pleasurable experience. In fact, students are encouraged NOT to spend money on expensive martial arts equipment that is not necessary.

Equipment needs are really specific to the art one intends to study. For example, Goshinjutsu students can wear a heavy-weight cotton sweat outfit and heavy socks (indoors) or tennis shoes (outdoors). Students participating in a martial art program will need to obtain a uniform before their first rank promotion test. Our standard training uniform, called a keiko-gi, consists of heavy-weight black judo-style jacket and pants, tabi (Japanese indoor socks) or jika-tabi (Japanese outdoor boots), and a white martial arts obi (belt). Also, students in the Ninpo and Buki programs will need to purchase their own training tools, such as a training sword (termed, bok-ken or bok-to) and staff (termed, bo).
